Florida 45, Miami (FL) 16

Orange Bowl, Miami, FL

The game featured the infamous "Florida Flop" which allowed Gators QB John Reaves to break Jim Plunkett's NCAA career passing yardage record.

Late in the game with Florida up 45-8, Reaves threw an interception leaving him 14 yards shy of Plunkett's record. With Miami in possession of the ball deep in Florida territory and the Gators out of timeouts, Florida's defenders flopped to the ground in unison, allowing Hurricanes running back John Hornibrook to score a touchdown. On the following Florida possession, Reaves threw a 15-yard completion to Carlos Alvarez and broke Plunkett's record.

After the game, Miami coach Fran Curci refused to shake the hand of Florida coach Doug Dickey. Curci called the Flop a "bush-league play", but Dickey denied knowledge of the players' planned flop. The previous season, then-Tampa head coach Curci called Florida "cry-babies".
