Game Summary[]
Washington score the first touchdown on a quarterback sneak by Chris Rowland.
Washington State got the first break of the game as defensive tackle Mark Husfloen recovered Robin Earl's fumble on the Washington 17, which led to fullback Vaughn Williams' first touchdown.
The second score by Williams followed another Earl fumble at the 22.
Sandwiched between those scores, John Hopkins contributed with an option keeper around end to cap a drive that started with a Washington fumble.
The Huskies score right before haltime on a pass from Moon to Gaines, who had been primarily used as a punt blocker to that point.
Ahead 27-14, Washington State decided to not play for the field goal and instead went for the knockout blow as Hopkins went back to pass. Unfortunatly, Hopkins was intercepted by Al Burleson, who returned it 93 yards down the left sideline to the end zone with three minutes left.
Then, after a three-and-out by the Cougars, Washington started at their own 22. On the first play, Moon threw into coverage and the pass deflected off Leon Garrett and into the hands of his teammate Gaines, who ran the remaining 40 yards for the score.
