Tom Holmoe then returned an interception 63-yards as the Cougars knotted the score, 7-7. The Cougars led much of the second half, their score coming on a 21-yard pass from Steve Young to Scott Collie.

Herschel Walker (cast on broken thumb) picked up 51 of his 124 yards in the fourth quarter as Georgia scored on successive drives late in the game. First, a touchdown with 5:36 left and then the field goal.

For BYU, Georgia marked the highest-ranked team the Cougars have played (sixth by Associated Press).

BYU showed well statistically, edging the Dawgs 22-20 in first downs and 339-275 in totals offense.
